For twenty-three years, one of my wrestling “holy grails” has been the April 2001 edition of World Championship Wrestling Magazine.
With Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell - TOTALLY BUFFED - on the cover, shirtless and flexing their physiques, the back was the advertisement for the May 6, 2001 “Big Bang” pay-per-view.
That advertisement has been the subject of fantasy booking and dream scenarios. Eric Bischoff has done interviews, in amazement, on how much legacy that advertisement has to die-hard WCW fans. The domain of the website on the ad was a hot topic for a long time, as well.
I wonder who bought that.
WWE.com has even discussed it in an article on February 19, 2016, written by Jeff Laboon.
Well, last week, after years of searching and failed bids on eBay, I found a copy for a decent price. Like a cheetah in the Serengeti, I pounced on it and, thanks to a “BUY IT NOW” button, I made the purchase.
Today, it arrived. For the wrestling fan boy in me, it was like Wrestling Christmas.
In the coming days, I am going to read the magazine cover-to-cover and review it. Until then, it’s a badge of honor.
It all started with a Big Bang.
